AKKO Arizona Branch Chief Preparing to climb Kilimanjaro in Tanzania this summer The followng was reported by Eric English from ABC 15 News in Arizona: "Marc Ashton gathered his group together Sunday and announced the start of the hike. "Ok, let's get ready for Kilimanjaro. It's (Pinnacle Peak) an 8 mile hike," said Ashton.
Every other weekend, this group of intrepid hikers meets at the base of Pinnacle Peak, ready for the challenging hike to the top.
Mike Armstrong was excited about the hike. "This is a fun one right here," Armstrong said.
| The group is using the peaks around the Valley to train for an expedition to tackle mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania this summer. | Steadily moving up the rocky trails, the group passes through some of the Valley's most beautiful vistas, but these hikers may never get a chance to see their beautiful surroundings. | "I can't see a thing. I have had my eyes removed," Armstrong said. "These are prosthetic." | These are visually impaired hikers, taking part in the Foundation for the Blind's expedition to the top of Kilimanjaro to raise money and awareness to support services for the blind. | | Eight hikers will each be accompanied by two sighted partners to help them navigate their way. | "Their visions range," said Ashton. "Some have no vision, some have some peripheral or central vision." | Despite their visual limitations, these climbers can really move up and down the hill well, and are getting better each time out. They say they're looking forward to this challenge that lies ahead. | "I am trying to study, but have Kilimanjaro in the back of my head. Oh yeah, I am excited," said Soon Flynn, one of the visually impaired hikers." Shihan Mike Armstrong travels to Taiwan with Echotribe

Besides running a dojo full-time and raising a family, Shihan MIke Armstrong is on tour as the drummer for a church band titled Echotribe for two weeks in Taiwan. Being blind has not stopped him from accomplishing many endeavors. We support him in all that he does.
Nine visually impaired hikers are reaching new heights by taking part in this weekend's Phoenix Summit Challenge. The Foundation for Blind Children organized the group, and guides have trained with the unlikely mountaineers for months. Over two days, they are hiking seven Phoenix peaks: Camelback Mountain, South Mountain, North Mountain, Piestewa Peak, Shaw Butte, Lookout Mountain and Papago. They'll cover more than 22 miles and gain 6,000 feet in elevation. They hope their accomplishment will inspire others. Hiker Mike Armstrong said, "The biggest disability that anybody has is in their mind. We all have challenges in life, and it's up to you to get off the couch and do something about it." The blind hikers say the seven summits are just training for a bigger challenge. They plan to hike 19,000-foot Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in June 2009. Sensei Jason Pransky recently was married and moved to New Jersey. He continues to be a representative of AKKO and is Branch Chief of New Jersey. He will be missed in California and we wish him a prosperous future.
| Dojo Tips from the President: These tips are ideas that you might already be doing but if not, maybe they will be helpful. Kyokushin Spirit: · Keep focus on who and what we are! KYOKUSHIN first. If you’re training in other disciplines, we think it’s great because, the more knowledge you have the better person you become. Just keep in mind - we are Kyokushin. OSU! · Teach conditioning, but do not over train and hurt students. This is so your students are not out of training for a week or more. · Teach what you have been taught. There are now a lot of things on TV telling how Kyokushin is. We know Kyokushin, so don’t doubt yourself or your Sensei. We live Kyokushin. · One of our students told me the other night with the problems they have had, they are grateful for karate. Then the student said their new attitude is: I am KYOKUSHIN and I will deal with it. Whatever life brings I am Kyokushin!!! BE LOYAL TO YOURSELF, YOUR SCHOOL AND YOUR SENSEI WITH THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR. OSU! Philosophical Thoughts What is Loyalty?
Loyalty can be defined as faithfulness or a devotion to a person or cause. The concept of loyalty is an important part of ethics. Plato originally said "only a man who is just can be loyal, and that loyalty is a condition of genuine philosophy.” The philosopher Josiah Royce said "it was the supreme moral good, and that one's devotion to an object mattered more than the merits of the object itself”. Among many characteristics of a person, loyalty is a quality you look for in a friend. It seems like in the martial arts you hear more disloaylty than loyalty. The following are several examples: 1. Bad mouthing a past sensei 2.Quitting their sensei for $$$ or fame. 3. Disrepect of their dojo or sensei There are countless others that don't need to be mentioned that many senseis can recall. It seems like you hardly ever hear about the good things students and fellow Blackbelt do. Let me share a great story: One of the southern California Dojo's rent escalated to the point of almost shutting down . Sensei was worried about what to do. He mentioned the issue with one of his students and word got around. His students said this is our home, how can we help? They all got together and remodeled the Dojo and went out and marketed their home. Guess what? It looks like the Dojo is going be a grand success. I am very proud of these students of the AKKO for their contributions of time, effort, and trades simply for the love of their dojo. NOW THIS IS WHAT I CALL TRUE LOYALTY!!!

Health Tips Drinking Water?

Lack of water is the #1 Trigger of daytime Fatigue. 3.Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 805 of the sufferers. 4. A styudy was done and the results were a mere 2% drop in water can trigger fuzzy short term memory trouble with math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen. 5.Studies say Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%plus it can slash the risk of breast cancerby 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer Are you drinking the amount of water you should everyday? Of course like everything else too much of anything is not the cure either so check with your doctor for the best amount of water because we are all different sizes and ned differnet amounts
Positive Thinking How many times have you met people who seem to "have it all" and yet, all they do is complain about how bad they have it? Then, there are others who in spite of having to cope with unusually difficult challenges see themselves as fortunate and even blessed. I think this goes further than simply letting a smile be your umbrella. Rather, it's the deeper perspective they hold for themselves and the world around them that colors every event and interaction of their daily lives. For those who see the glass as half-full, the voice is a friendly one. However, wouldn't it be great if those who live in a world of half-empty glasses could change their perspective to bring more joy and satisfaction to their lives? |
